Mother of Pearl

Mother of pearl refers to the polished shell of any pearl-producing oyster or mussel. The most famous mother of pearl shell comes from the black-lipped (Pinctada Margaritifera) that produces Tahitian cultured pearls. First "fished" commercially more than 150 years ago and used in the production of buttons, furniture and jewellery it has seen a revival in recent years.

Tahitian mother or pearl is famous for its dark colours and lustrous sheen. It can be worn as pendants and earrings and is often incorporated into leather or silver necklaces to accompany and enhance the black pearls and create a whole new individual look.
